Keto Crab Crostini with Avocado Tartar Sauce

Keto Crab Crostini with Avocado Tartar Sauce is just a perfect appetizer! You can call it “finger food.” The size we use for this recipe is 2 x 3 inches. Great for cocktail parties – no forks needed! It is like Avocado Toast on Bruschetta with lump crab meat. Plus, by using our Cheesy Garlic Bread instead of a baguette, you will have a low-carb delight. Only 3g of carbs and with 21g of fat, you have the best Keto appetizer!

Ingredients

What is the key to the perfect appetizer? You know, the one that disappears first from the serving plate. The answer is to choose a highly desirable main ingredient. Lump crab meat is a choice that will guarantee a win. Put it up against those little mini-hot dogs and you know which one will disappear first. We would love to use fresh crab meat, but in the Southwest we do not have the easy access like those near oceans. Nevertheless, although more expensive, we can find delicious lump crab meat at most market stores.

Many crab crostini recipes call for mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, lemon, garlic, capers, and cheeses. They are usually hot appetizers so the cheese can melt into the crab. These are delicious, but there is something surprisingly special about unmasking the crab. Plus, our Keto Crab Crostini uses our Low Carb Cheesy Garlic Bread instead of carb-laden baguette and our delicious Avocado Tartar Sauce with Pickled Jalapeños. We get a pop of flavor in every bite.

We also think that what makes crab so delicious is that it pairs so well with butter. Of course, everything is better with butter! But, crab and butter just seem to go together. We like to add a little hot sauce to the butter so our appetizer has a bit of kick. We use Cholula. It is milder than Tabasco and when mixed with butter has a sauce mildly similar to Buffalo Sauce.

Ingredients for Keto Crab Crostini with Avocado Tartar Sauce

As shown below, Low Carb Cheesy Garlic Bread is where you start with this recipe. If you haven’t tried it yet, you will be amazed. It is very flexible. It can be used with any dip, as a baguette substitute, and even as a delicious pizza crust. Mix up a pan full and you are ready to proceed. You will also have to make a small bowl of our Avocado Tartar Sauce. It serves as the glue to hold the crab meat in place.

Preparation Tips

Our Low Carb Cheesy Garlic Bread is actually cut into longer pieces than you may want for a cocktail party appetizer. We did cut ours into 2 X 3 inch pieces, but you may also want to make them 2 X 2 square. This would probably work better for a party where you are offering numerous “finger-food” offerings.

As with any lump crab meat recipe, be very gentle when mixing the crab with the butter and hot sauce. Folding is the best technique to maintain the texture of larger pieces of crab. We also use roasted red peppers since they are softer than chopped red pepper. Ours are roasted over the stove, but if you buy a jarred variety make sure you get a quality brand. We like El Navarrico Paquillo Pepper Strips. Just make sure you dry them on paper towels before chopping and mixing to maintain the firmness of the crab mixture.

Start by spreading a healthy amount of the Avocado Tartar Sauce on each crostini. If you run out of crab meat, this sauce on top of the Cheesy Garlic Bread is delicious by itself. Top with a tablespoon of the crab mixture. Sprinkle some chopped cilantro or parsley and you have a colorful and outrageously delicious appetizer. If you like you can sprinkle with extra parmesan cheese and bake the appetizers in a preheated 350 degree oven for 5 minutes before adding the cilantro. Hot or cold, it is delicious!
