Keto Mezcal Orange Margarita tastes as unusual as the name implies . . . yet, it is so delicious! Is this the best way to enjoy Mezcal? Many would say this smoky tequila-like liquor tastes best either straight, or on-the-rocks for sipping. Some would say that if you drink Mezcal straight you will have a drink to rival the finest tequila, scotch, or whiskey. Drinking it straight will certainly amplify the aroma and smoky flavor of Mezcal. But, we have made a delicious cocktail that will keep you in your low-carb lifestyle, and add to your cocktail choices.

Mezcal is a hot craze these days at traditional tequila bars here in the Southwest. Mezcal is a distilled spirit from the agave plant. It translates into “oven-cooked agave.” Tequila is actually a form of Mezcal. But, tequila comes from only one agave plant, and is usually steamed in an oven. Mezcal can come from many different agave plants and, is often smoked in underground pits or wood-fired . That gives it the smoky flavor. Production of Mezcal is booming, as are the cocktail recipes and uses.

Ingredients
Mezcal is, of course, the key ingredient in our cocktail. You can now find it in most wine or alcohol stores. Some of the top Mezcals are made by Del Maguey from Oaxaca. They offer a higher end bottle “Chichicapa” which, although expensive, is excellent for a stand-alone drink. The brand we enjoy for margaritas is Mezcal Sacrificio. It is not quite as expensive as some Mezcal, and it works well for cocktails. It does have that distinctive smoky flavor, but with an added citrus taste. We do blend it with a good Tequila Blanco for this mixed drink. If you are new to Mezcal, blending this way is a good introduction. You can use all Mezcal, if you prefer, or stick with our blend. Even using all Tequila will produce a perfect orange margarita.

Our Keto Mezcal Orange Margarita is a low-carb version, in spite of using real orange juice. That is because we substitute for the usual sugary fresh orange juice, with Trop 50 Orange Juice. We have written about Trop 50 before in our post Keto Tequila Sunrise Cocktail. It is lower in carbs than freshly squeezed orange juice, and clearly a lot less sugar. You will get a realistic orange flavor for our “Keto Mezcal Orange Margarita” and lower carbs. We also use fresh Lime Juice.

We know that without the high fat content, many would say this is not Keto. However, with the low-carb numbers, let’s say it is Keto-friendly. The net-carbs are only 7.5g! You could experiment with water enhancers, instead, to cut the carbs further. We have used water enhancers for other cocktails. You may want to try any of the following:
Low Carb Hurricane Cocktail
Cooks in 5 minutesDifficulty: EasyJust like Pat O'Brien's Hurricane Cocktail with only 2 carbs and all the taste! Don't wait for Mardi Gras, make a batch at home – it is Keto friendly! This one is not only colorful, but it is also delicious!
Low Carb Piña Colada
Cooks in 5 minutesDifficulty: EasyOur Low Carb Piña Colada is the national drink of Puerto Rico – a smooth blend of rum, coconut, and pineapple. Use either coconut-pineapple water enhancer or Torani Sugar-free Syrups.
However, for this drink, and with the power of the smoky Mezcal alcohol, we suggest sticking with the Lime Juice and Trop 50 Orange Juice.

Preparation Tips
The preparation for our Keto Mezcal Orange Margarita is simple. Instead of salt, use Tajin to coat the rim of our Margarita glass. If you do not have this spice handy, you can mix a tablespoon of sea salt with 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder and get the same effect. The mixture adds to the Mezcal-based cocktail . . . a little Southwestern flair. Simply coat the rim of your glass with lime juice and dip the edges in the coating mixture.

Fill a cocktail shaker 1/3 full with ice and just add all the ingredients – shake vigorously for 10 seconds, and you will have a finished delicious and unique cocktail – perfect for the Holidays, or any day! Make sure your Margarita Glass is also filled with ice. We always strain our fruit-based cocktails when pouring. We like to garnish with a lime wedge for this creation, but you could use a wedge of orange if you prefer.
