Keto Tequila Sunrise Cocktail

“It’s another tequila sunrise, stirrin’ slowly cross the sky . . . “ Thank you Eagles for a classic song about a real classic cocktail! Our Keto Tequila Sunrise Cocktail will capture that 70’s feeling and spare you the extra carbs! Plus, you may hear people proclaiming the joy in sharing a “fun drink.” This one is truly a “fun drink.” You can actually see the sunrise and the stir releases the color throughout the cocktail. Admittedly, this becomes more noticeable after your second or third drink, but it does remind us of the 70’s, and watching the sunrise.

The classic version of a Tequila Sunrise contains three ingredients – tequila, orange juice, and grenadine. Okay, you first question is, “how can this be low in carbs when it contains orange juice?” Not to mention the grenadine syrup? This Keto-friendly creation will keep the carbs low with two substitutions. First, Trop 50, low-sugar orange juice, and second, Teisseire Sugar-Free Grenadine Syrup. You will not have that frothy, pulp-loaded taste of fresh squeezed orange juice. But, the Trop 50 concentrate based orange juice will keep you on the program.

Ingredients

The tequila is the star of the cocktail. Choose a top notch silver tequila. We like 1800 Tequila or Patron, although the latter is pricey. Skip the more aged tequilas with their amber color and stronger taste. They are great for straight shots. However, for cocktails, the color and taste of silver tequilas will be fine. But, let’s talk orange juice.

As noted above, low-sugar Trop 50 is the key to making our Keto Tequila Sunrise Cocktail low in carbs. We only use 3 ounces for the drink and that equates to 4.7g carbs. Not bad! The rest of the ingredients provide zero carbs, so we feel this time it is worth using the Trop 50. You can get the same carb content by using a Sunrise Light. That is not so readily available for us. We have used water enhancers and orange extract with water to achieve our orange flavor for other drinks (try our Classic Low Carb Margarita). However, this time we like the more realistic taste that the Trop 50 provides.

Finally, our red-colored substitute for Grenadine is Teisseire Sugar-Free Grenadine Syrup. Although grenadine is basically pomegranate juice, it tastes like cherry in mixed drinks. The Teisseire product is perfect for this drink and also works well on pancakes or waffles, since it is thicker. We also have used the raspberry flavor and sweetness that the Torani Red Raspberry Sugar-Free Syrup provides. For a substitute, you might also want to try DaVinci’s Sugar-free Cherry Syrup or Monin’s Sugar-free Pomegranate Syrup. These choices are less syrup-like and you may not see the traditional layered look for the Tequila Sunrise.

You may also make your own thick puree for the bottom layer. Use pureed strawberries, or a blend of berries (strawberry, raspberry and cherry) to obtain that red color. Two minutes in a Vitamix blender until smooth, a splash of lemon juice, another pulse, and then strained over a bowl will produce a nice thick blended puree for the cocktail. Although a mix of raspberry and cherry will have the more realistic taste, if you use just strawberries you will also have a puree for frozen strawberry margaritas.

Preparation Tips

The secret to a tequila sunrise is layering the ingredients. Start with the ice in the glass and then pour in the shaken tequila and Trop 50. We found the best way to display the classic red coloring on the bottom is to pour the red syrup over the back of a spoon and allow it to drizzle through the ice. We got the idea for the spoon-drizzle when we watched a local mixologist make a drink that added the syrup in this fashion. Top our Sunrise with an orange slice and serve cold. You will enjoy the “sunrise” as you stir.
