Low Carb Ward 8 Cocktail

Low Carb Ward 8 Cocktail has an interesting story behind its creation. It is a vintage drink from Boston and was supposedly created to celebrate an election victory for a local politician (clearly from Ward 8). Vintage is the key word since it was first created in the late 1890s, prior to prohibition. We are glad it made its return and today is enjoying a revival, of sorts. Our low-carb version has on 4.2g of carbs and is a nice addition to your low-carb drink collection.

It is a take on a traditional “whiskey sour.” The original contains Rye Whiskey, a Citrus Juice, Orange Juice and just a bit of Grenadine. We like it with Bourbon instead of Rye Whiskey, since the Bourbon is a bit sweeter. It will cut some of the tartness from the citrus.

Ingredients

Choose a top notch bourbon for your Low Carb Ward 8 Cocktail. It is the center piece of the recipe and should be featured. We like “Knobb Creek Bourbon.” It is a higher end bourbon made by the “Jim Beam” distillers. A bit of vanilla, caramel, dried fruit with that oak barrel richness . . . it is a good one, whether “neat” or in a cocktail. Maker’s Mark is another high end Bourbon for the recipe. You can surely use a tasty straight rye whiskey and even scotch would work well. We suggest trying Bourbon, first.

Our red-colored substitute for Grenadine is Teisseire Sugar-Free Grenadine Syrup. Although grenadine is basically pomegranate juice, it tastes like cherry in mixed drinks. The Teisseire product is perfect for this drink and also works well on pancakes or waffles, since it is thicker. We have used Teisseire’s Sugar-free Grenadine Syrup before in our Keto Tequila Sunrise Cocktail.

Low-sugar Trop 50 is the key to making our Low Carb Ward 8 Cocktail low in carbs. We only use 2 ounces for the drink. That equates to only 3.4g carbs. Not bad! The rest of the ingredients provide virtually zero carbs, so we feel this time it is worth using the Trop 50.

Preparation Tips

Preparation could not be easier. All you really need is a quality stainless steel cocktail shaker with a strainer. Fill it half-way with ice cubes, add all of the ingredients except for the orange wedges for garnish, and she vigorously for 20-30 seconds. the outside of your shaker will have cold water drops and will be ice cold. Strain to avoid any ice shards, garnish, and enjoy cold!

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces 56 ml Bourbon

  • 1/2 ounce 1/2 ounce Lemon juice (fresh squeezed)

  • 2 ounces 56 ml Orange juice (Trop50)

  • 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon Grenadine syrup (Tesisseire)

  • 1 1 Orange wedge (garnish)

Instructions

  • Add all of the ingredients (except the garnish) to a cocktail shaker.
  • Fill the shaker 1/2 full with ice cubes. Shake until cold (outside of shaker will be moist and cold to the touch).
  • Strain the drink into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange wedge and serve cold..
